It’s Easter. Mulan got a basket with candy and we went on an Easter egg hunt. Next year Mulan will be too old for it – many of her friends parents who have kids just a wee bit older than Mulan have given up on it, and I suspect that next year will be her last with this sort of thing. But it does feel like Spring! Eggs and hotter whether. Grills and outdoor heaters (Michael is putting one together as I type…)

Last night Michael and I watched all the trailers for “Expelled,” the anti-evolution, intelligent design movie that Ben Stein made, or appears to have made, that’s opening in movie theaters on April 18th. I am just speechless.

Well, sort of.

What it made me feel most of all wasn’t anger, it wasn’t defeat or fear either. It was just this overwhelming tiredness. I feel so weary. It made me want to sleep and just try to get away from people who want to debate this topic at all.

To be honest, this shouldn’t even be something that is even being debated. It only continues to be in the public discourse at all because of the lack of sophisticated science education amongst the general public, coupled with groups who have a vested interest in keeping people confused on these matters, mixed with a darker push from elected officials (and some judges and those in power, funded by the more conservative religious groups) who use issues like this to rile people up and make the more complicated, truer view of life’s nature and origins seem as though it’s a debate between those who are moral and good and those who are cruel and heartless. So that when people skim the issue it appears as though those people (on the side of God) are the moral and just ones. They’re nicer. Cause, y’know, they believe in God. They are “open” to a God implanting and guiding life to it’s crowning glory, human beings! ARGH.

And I just… oh jeez.

Ben Stein once did a Groundling show, an improv show, that I was a part of. I found him to be spectacularly ill-informed and narcissistic and weirdly devoted to his schtick and worst of all, hacky. He didn’t listen to his fellow performers and played everything outward to his friends in the audience who laughed (fake, forced) at every single thing he did. When he became known as a “thinker” – when his public persona became the “smart guy” I was astounded. So this type of film does not come as any surprise.

I can’t listen to his voice. I can’t stand how he draws out his vowels in that fake-professorial way. He’s a cartoon character, for God’s sake.

But to a lot of people he will appear to make sense. His style will have the stamp of truthfulness to it (because his voice sounds so… um… smart!) and it will also make people feel better about what they already believe and what has made them feel comfortable their whole lives. And yet, if his mission is realized, which is to change education practice so that evolution isn’t taught properly, it will only end up handicapping our kids in a world who is – generally – moving towards a greater understanding of science which can lead to advances in technology which can lead to – well, it can lead to prosperity among other things. So they want evolution out, and handicapping their kids science education in, and yet they want a better and brighter future for their kids.

I hope this movie dies a horrible and embarrassing death.

“What The Bleep Do We Know?” gave some people a cheap and temporary spiritual blast of hot air and now this movie will give some people a cheap reason to be self-righteous in the name of science when they are being anything BUT. ARGH.

Well, I guess I am a little angry.

Anyhoo – HAPPY EASTER!

That's truthiness for you!

Have you heard about PZ Myer's adventure with Expelled yet?

I totally agree. This is all so pointless and stupid, and most of all divisive. To be honest, this is why we need people like you, who are funny and well-spoken, and most of all, not a scientist. You're the more approachable, human side of atheism/agnosticism/whatever for the otherwise decent people who might fall for this stuff. They find "egghead" types like Dawkins and even PZ threatening (sweet as they are).

That being said, I don't wish the ad hominem attacks the ne'er-do-wells involved throw around to be thrown at you, not to mention expending the energy it takes to combat this stuff. I certainly don't wish it on myself. I went to one local debate between Shermer and D'Souza and have had enough of the atrocious argumentative style the creationists put forward.

Anyway I notice I've been posting a lot here--sorry, not stalking you, I just have an RSS feed. It's full of mostly depressing things and your blog always makes me feel better, so I tend to click on that first. :)

OH and his gameshow was SCARY full of homophobia. Seriously. I couldn't watch after a few episodes.

I've got you RSS'd too...

I never thought Stein sounded smart...he always sounded like a parody of a dumb teacher trying to sound smart.

I thought he meant to do that...never paid much attention to him...but from what you say maybe he wasn't trying to be a parody...

O.K., let me see if I understand this: Ben Stein's movie is coming out in theaters next month and the brainiacs at Sundance didn't pick up LGOG?! What is WRONG with the world?! Juia's post made me remember that I've got something to share that others may find amusing. My son, who is 8 and in
2nd grade (and amazingly scientific) was having a discussion with a buddy at lunch last week. They were talking about their wonderment over the big bang. A third boy joined the conversation and said the big bang was hooey and that god created everything. My son (bless him!) then told the rest of the group that he is an atheist and then it turned to "there is a god"...."prove it..." etc. and apparently they both agreed to disagree and went on about eating their lunch. Now, my son has a shirt that says "Intelligent design makes my monkey sad" (with a cartoonish, frowning monkey face)...and below it "Evolution makes my monkey happy" (with a cartoonish, joyful monkey face). The thing is that it is his favorite shirt and now he wants to wear it to schol tomorrow and we live in Utah and I'm a teacher in the same school district, and I HATE how science is being taught. And, my son is like me in that he has a hard time keeping his mouth shut, but the last thing I want to do is silence him because that definitely sends him the wrong message...like we are hiding who we are.
I don't want to ramble, but I wanted to restate what someone else said that I think more of us, who are not scientists by trade need to come out and be freer with our thoughts on the subject of creationism. It's not just the scientists; it's the teachers, the firefighters, and even the 2nd graders who are "tired" as well.

Happy Easter.

That is such a laugh to me. My boys (7 and 9) and hubby and I had a discussion this morning about what easter is and why christians celebrate it. My little guy said, "They believe that Jesus was the son of god AND he CAME back TO LIFE? Just how crazy ARE all these people?"

It is a fine line we in the bible belt must walk and we have taught the boys to respect other people's opinions and decisions, so I pray (joke of course) that he doesn't say that TO someone. LOL

Oddly enough, though, the boys DID ask for an egg hunt this year. We've usually participated in one SOMEwhere in the walk of our lives, but this year no opportunity presented itself. So hubby and I created a treasure hunt around the house, which they REALLY enjoyed.

At the end, was a bundle of little goodies, which INCLUDED the book Born With a Bang by Jennifer Morgan. It tells the story about the beginning of the universe and is the first in a trilogy. I thought it was an amusing gift for an athiest's child on easter! LOL

"Bueller. Bueller. Bueller. Anyone? Anyone? Anyone?" I hate to admit it, but I used to use those lines to crack up my students from time to time. (Un?)fortunately, this generation doesn't get the joke because the movie's too old for them to have seen it. I used to think the line was hilarious...then I saw a talk show in which Stein was vehemently taking up for Richard Nixon! The more I learned about him, the more I hated his smugness. And now THIS!

I never thought I could loathe anyone as much as I do Patricia Heaton (the "Everybody Loves Raymond" actress who's a hugely annoying Pro-Lifer), but this Intelligent Design crap has pushed Stein to the top of the list.

I'm still awaiting word on whether I have tickets to the showing in Danville, CA near where I live. If so, I'm inviting Eugenie Scott. She recently sent out word that she's apparently been blacklisted and can't get tickets, and asked if anyone would like to take her as a "date." That should prove interesting. : )

Yeah. Narcissism and a devotion to truthiness are a detriment in what the base vulgar call ordinary life, but when it comes to being a TV pundit they're a positive boon. They're the kind of character traits that give Stein the brass to go on television and claim expertise in things he knows nothing about.

Stein's main skill, honed at Yale Law School and perfected in the Nixon White House, is in developing convincing-sounding arguments in support of utter nonsense. It's the same skill that holocaust deniers employ to stir up debate in a topic that should have been put to rest ages ago. Stein and his intellectual siblings do it for vanity, for political gain, for the applause of the ignorant (which can be loud and satisfying). They keep people stupid. They make them mean. And it's so damned hard to fix the damage once it's done.

Julia, I don't know if you read the comments you get on here. I also don't know if you're currently in L.A. But Expelled is playing Thursday night (3/27, 7:30 pm) in the Sutherland Auditorium on the Biola University campus in La Mirada. Tickets are $10 and you'll find the link to purchase them here: www.apologeticsevents.com

Personally, I'm struggling with the idea of paying to see the film, especially as part of an event on a Christian campus. I swore Ben wouldn't get a penny from me for this film. I must remain strong.

I can relate to how you feel about just being tired of it all. I am a pastor's kid so I've heard this nonsense my entire life.

Christians are a persistent bunch - wallowing in their own ignorance and, if truth be told, that's what finally drove me out of the church.

The favorite argument, where I live, is that "this country is founded on the freedom of religion" - oh how that would make me crazy! Even after being confronted with facts they still cling to their ignorance. It's frustrating and tiresome.

It's rather funny, actually ... Ben Stein of all people in the forefront of the crusade to storm the walls of the castle that Darwin built .. and recapture the Holy Grail of the Book of Genesis from the evil skeptics.
Somehow Ben Stein doesn't seem to fit the profile, and he will probably look thoroughly ridiculous in the outfit...

Okay, okay..... there's no doubt about it: it IS annoying.
And it does make one want to either pull out one's own hair, or pull out a Creationist's fingernails with a pair of white hot pliers.
But why bother?
Evolution is NOT a theory but a fact.. and there is no way that Genie can be stuffed back into a bottle by the concerted political machinations that are the real stuff of religion.

People don't become Creationists on the strength of a film, any more than one becomes an atheist because an authority figure says there is no god..
One has to have a predilection for it.. a desire for the world view that includes a father figure in charge of the universe and everything in it..
And such seekers are not going to be talked out of it by a film either...
So creationists will go to the Stein's movie (at least to the extent that real Fundamentalists go to ANY movie, or theater, or art exhibit, or opera... , and Evolutionists, skeptics, atheists will stay home.
And the numbers on each side won't change.
(Remember the vast audiences who attended Mel Gibson's film on the Crucifixion? The film that enjoyed months of hype and hysteria before and during its showings? And that also had the advantage of having hints of yummy homoerotic pornography going for it? Well, it all passed into history , having had after its 15 minutes of fame no discernible impact on America's already hysteria -ridden late 20th century outburst of religious fervor.)
There is a process by which people come to ideas...
The job of people who post here (the GOOD people) is, I think, to see to it that our own children are free to access that process...
One small step for man..
It took five thousand years of Abrahamic religion for us to get so crazy...so it's unreasonable to expect it to disappear after the mere hundred and fifty years during which Darwin's observations offered definitive challenge to the already preposterous concept of a 6,000 year old earth where men and dinosaurs gamboled together .. while the vengeful Creator looked down on them smiling like Alfred E, Newman on acid, while . thinking up schemes for making them miserable.... or wiping them out altogether.
Such nonsense.
And Easter?
For everyone who is made happy by the idea of Christ's resurrection, a billion others are being made miserable by it....some attending funerals of people who were slaughtered in recognition of Good Friday..
.
But if happy is what people want. then Happy Vernal Equinox, as we savages say... as we celebrate the crocuses popping up all over the lawn, and he daffodils ready to burst into bloom.
Another Spring, another chance to fight the good fight against ignorance and sloth in favor of the beauty of the rational..

Great post Julia! We share your pain...interesting to hear your insights into Stein...

It is very curious that Stein got involved in this whole affair. I never paid him much attention before - I saw him do his quiz show a couple of times, but like others his smarty-pants persona put me off, although I suppose I did think he was probably quite a clever chap. Then I started reading the Expelled web site and what he had to say about evolution. I don't have a degree in Biology, but I've read enough about Evolution to have a fairly good grasp of the basics. What really alarmed me was that Stein was completely ignorant about evolution, and constantly wheeled out one strawmen after another.

The question then is, who got to how, and how. Why is a supposedly intellectual person so gullible that he was too lazy to even properly research what evolution is and isn't? Sad really, isn't it? Obviously his fame as a D-lister has gone striaght to his head!

LisaJ said...

Great post Julia!

I also share your pain regarding the Expelled movie and the whole ridiculous sentiment behind it. Regarding the public acceptance of Ben Stein (or BS) as a 'thinker', this always makes me want to vomit in my mouth a little bit. Even my fiance who is an intelligent, well educated man, about to graduate from Med school responds with, 'are you serious? But he's such a smart man'. Wow.

"Evolution is NOT a theory but a fact.."

Technically, this is incorrect.

Evolution is BOTH theory AND fact. It is a theory in that it accurately explains the descent of organisms (and pretty much everything else we know about Biology) -- it is a fact because it is OBSERVED.

Hipple, Rev. Paul T. said...

Given what you've just said coupled with the fact that Ben Stein appears to be an apostate, quite clearly both Christians and non-Christians have reasons to doubt Ben Stein's authority.

It is unfortunate that the producers of that otherwise remarkable documentary were duped by Ben Stein, which will undermine their whole project.

They should have gone to Mel Gibson for that role, IMO.

Give up hunting brightly colored eggs? No way -- I even did it with my wife when we were first married (and she a nominal Buddhist/Shintoist and I an atheist) -- we colored four eggs, and took turns hiding them in our apartment for each other.

My kid did it this year, and they're not even conscious of a religious reason for it yet.

I saw this film at the theatre from which PZ was expelled. In fact he was expelled in front of me. Stein, producer Mark Mathis, and Co. are a fine bunch to harp about Nazis when the atmosphere they created (big cop hulking around, Mark Mathis reading a “warning” beforehand to us about the “enemies of this film” and “we’re working with the FBI, $250,000 fine, up to 5 years in prison,” making us sign agreements not to “copy” the “film” (actually a laptop feed) beforehand, etc.) was straight out of a bad distopia film. The entire experience was unnerving and disagreeable! (Of course, once the story of PZ’s expulsion got out, it was hilarious.)

I concur with your reaction to the film – it’s merely vacuous, tired canards, coupled with “illustrating” stock footage “jokes” pounding the point home in case anyone out there doesn’t understand that Ben Stein conducts his interviews to mock people and any ideas other than his Judeo-Christian God made the universe. This film is beyond mediocre – sophmoric, overlong, shrill, and unfunny – just pathetic.

Plus, I’ve been reading accounts online about Ben Stein throwing himself at women.
He's an ass. My girlfriend was a contestant on his "Win Ben Stein's money" show. During the break, off-camera, he hit on her in the most creepy way. She left the whole experience feeling dirty about it. Relevant? It goes to his character.
Wow, what a guy. Apparently he thinks he’s hot stuff. Maybe he’s expelled mirrors from his house. He’s certainly expelled intelligence from his brain.

Eggs hunt! We have no ending in sight, next year (he'll be 13) we're thinking of a pirate map type of hunt, complete with shovels or maybe an orienteering sort of affair with a compass. This year he came in under 2 hours and I used some of those new, "hard to find eggs," and chucked them deep into the saw palmetto.

Otherwise. Yup. Agree with everything. Yup. Stein=idiot. Atheist=great. Sweeney=fount of wisdom.

When my wife and I moved to Washington state, and took our 9 year old with us, we created a new Easter/Spring tradition. The Easter Bunny from Hell.

We set up puzzles and clues that had to be solved to find the Easter Basket, and this tradition only ended when she turned 18 years old. The last year, her clues were all over Seattle and were found in riddles read by store clerks, and arcade cames successfully played. Each clue would lead her to the next and the final clue gave her the basket. She was joined by a friend and an aunt one year, as she drove all over the city, only to get the last clue that told her the basket was in the trunk of the car she had spent the last several hours in. Funny part of it was, the "hunt" became more fun than the contents of the basket. As atheists, we wanted something that she could enjoy outside of the religious, and now (years later) she is a new mother and has requested that when our grandchild is old enough to get the clues, she wants The Easter Bunny from Hell to visit her child.

Simple clues from school lessons, questions whose answers can be found on the Internet, and observational clues all work for younger children. And I like Petra's idea of good books in the basket. Our daughter wasn't fond of candy, so we often found many other things to fill the basket with.

Hah! You want something really painful? Evangelist Ray Comfort is going to a Hollywood showing of that movie this Friday. Fortunatly, Ray is quite lenient about the comments on his blog, so you can see a lot of people spanking the movie right there.

Unfortunately, nothing seems to be sinking in, but at least any "fence-sitters" there will know the truth and will be able to know where to look for further reading.

Nope, sorry, but it continues in the public discourse because the majority give the fundamentalists a pass by ignoring the topic. But, you just spoke out, so, hey, thanks! The only way you can make this go away is by getting involved. Don't think it isn't being taught in YOUR neighborhood school. Survey's show that a third of all public school science teachers are willing to teach some version of creation science for "balance". Silence has allowed the creation science propaganda campaign to be successful. At least four states currently have anti-evolution bills ready for Stein's movie. Texas already passed their's into law. They have the momentum, and its because most people can't be bothered.

Hi, Julia! I'm also a Julia and a blogger, and a sometime improv performer, and I was interested to hear about Ben Stein's movie, and your improv experience with him.

I hate working with selfish improv-ers who are always drawing attention to themselves and going for the easy gag rather than advancing the scene. I also wanted to add that when Mr. Stein did a recent Op-Ed column for the NY Times, he misattributed the quote "Après moi, le déluge" to Louis XV instead of to Louis' clever mistress, Madame de Pompadour. How like a man!

Anyone catch Ben's monologue on CBS Sunday morning right after Eliot Spitzer resigned. It was a barely comprehensible attack on the busybodies at the IRS who have the gall to investigate actions that are none of their business (Ben ignored that private activity might be a public menace, or if not, at least illegal).

But the gem was his logic that the IRS busybodies had "undone" an election and thereby undermined the will of the people. This was what bothered Ben.

I find it hard to believe that a former speech writer for Nixon can't think of a precedent.

'the religious abandon their critical thinking skills when it comes to God'

- the Bible says: 'be wise as snakes' - it does not say think stupid.

In fact religious people should question every aspect of their belief. Not in a negative way. But so as to come to a true understanding of faith. So that they really believe as oppose to believing out of tradition or habit.

But at some point Christians have to stop questioning and believe! They have to make a leap of faith.

Just as scientists make leaps of faith. Einstein based his theory of relativity on rational thinking but at a certain point he had to make a leap of faith (he said that 'imagination was more important than knowledge' in order to come to his theory.

Einstein's thinking has now brought us to theories such as string theory - that propose that there are more than three dimensions (now how can you get your head around that - but that is what scientists are proposing).

Science cannot prove anyting, as it stands - with 100% certainty. In fact some immaterialist philosophers debate whether material substance exists at all!

Returning to my your original point
''the religious abandon their critical thinking skills when it comes to God' NO! - to abandon one's critical thinking IS NOT religion, at least, not Christianity. It is supersticion. But at some point, just as scientists are having to do, in particular, with the big questions of life (the ones that really matter) Christians have to make a leap of faith. But, overall, that is not the same as you imply.

Best wishes

Einstein based his theory of relativity on rational thinking but at a certain point he had to make a leap of faith (he said that 'imagination was more important than knowledge') in order to come to his theory.

That was not a leap of faith -- it was a leap of imagination. The two are not equivalent. Einstein did not take his results on faith. He -- and the scientists who came after him -- subjected his ideas to rigorous testing, as is required in the sciences.

Sure, nothing in science is "proved". A theory is accepted (provisionally) if it survives every attempt made to disprove it. So far, Einstein's done pretty well, and at this point it's extremely unlikely that any new results will overthrow Relativity -- though it's quite possible that some new results will show that Relativity breaks down at its limits and something else will be necessary (just as Newton's theories broke down at high speeds and high masses, requiring Einstein's work to fill in).

None of this is a matter of faith, but of ongoing, repeated testing.

Amazingly, I had the almost exact same experience with Stein when he did a Second City workshop I took part in, back in the late 80s.
He really thought his Sh*t didn't stink, comedy wise....EVERY inane thing he spouted he thought should get an appreciative laugh...personally, I got bored of his pointless "workshop" (of which HE actually conducted about 1/4, foisting the rest off onto assistants) about 3/4 of the way through and left...

Hi Julia - Just came upon your blog via MySpace, so I was reading some past entries. I'm curious: why do you celebrate Easter if you don't believe in God? I think that even more than Christmas, it is a still a religious holiday. Otherwise it's just a day for kids to eat candy. Why buy into the hype if you don't believe in the underlying reason for the holiday?

For me it wasn't such a great movie. I have read some critics about Stein and I don't see why everyone is getting so mad about him saying Darwinism can't explain gravity and thermodynamics. Stein is obviously correct in this respect.
